Informally, it is shaped like a ring or a <a href="page.php?w=Washer_%28hardware%29">hardware washer</a>. The word "annulus" is borrowed from the <a href="page.php?w=Latin">Latin</a> word anulus or annulus meaning 'little ring'. The adjectival form is <b><i>annular</i></b> (as in <a href="page.php?w=annular_eclipse">annular eclipse</a>).</p><p>
