All definitions agree that bases are substances that react with <a href="page.php?w=acid">acid</a>s, as originally proposed by <a href="page.php?w=Guillaume-Fran%C3%A7ois_Rouelle">G.-F. Rouelle</a> in the mid-18th century.</p>
