In the <a href="page.php?w=Russian_Empire">Russian Empire</a>, the term was the official title of the supreme military commanders of the Cossack armies. The Ukrainian version of the same word is <a href="page.php?w=hetman">hetman</a>. <b><i>Otaman</i></b> in Ukrainian Cossack forces was a position of a lower rank.</p>
