It is a specific interdisciplinary branch of <a href="page.php?w=mineralogy">mineralogy</a>. Some <a href="page.php?w=jewellery">jewelers</a> (and many non-jewelers) are academically trained gemologists and are qualified to identify and evaluate gems.</p>
