It extends into a star's surface until the <a href="page.php?w=plasma_%28physics%29">plasma</a> becomes opaque, equivalent to an <a href="page.php?w=optical_depth">optical depth</a> of approximately 2/3, or equivalently, a depth from which 50% of light will escape without being scattered.</p>
