<p>A <b>sclerotium</b> (; : <b>sclerotia</b>  is a compact mass of hardened fungal <a href="page.php?w=mycelium">mycelium</a> containing food reserves. One role of sclerotia is to survive environmental extremes. In some higher <a href="page.php?w=fungi">fungi</a> such as <a href="page.php?w=ergot">ergot</a>, sclerotia become detached and remain dormant until favorable growth conditions return.
