It is generally synonymous with <a href="page.php?w=county">county</a> (such as <a href="page.php?w=Cheshire">Cheshire</a> and <a href="page.php?w=Worcestershire">Worcestershire</a>). <a href="page.php?w=English_counties">English counties</a> are among the oldest extant national divisions in the world.</p>
