26 July, ISIL conducted a counterattack against Syrian Army troops in an attempt to maintain its foothold in Raqqa province and defend Maadan. In the evening of that day, the Syrian Army captured the last hills eight kilometers southwest of Sukhnah, imposing fire control over the town. Several hours later, the Syrian Army started its attack on Sukhnah, quickly reaching its outskirts after a seven-kilometer advance and entering it from the west and south, according to military sources.
