In fact, the first edition was published disguised as an actual medieval romance from Italy, discovered and republished by a fictitious translator. Once revealed as modern, many found it <a href="page.php?w=anachronism">anachronistic</a>, <a href="page.php?w=reactionary">reactionary</a>, or simply in poor taste, but it proved immediately popular.</p>
