In 1951 the Australian Grand Prix was held on a 4.4 mi circuit through the town's streets. The event attracted a crowd estimated at 35,000, and was won by Warwick Pratley driving an Australian developed car. An annual race meeting was held on a shorter 2.2 mi circuit starting in 1948, replacing Pingelly as host of the Great Southern Flying 50.
