At this time Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, Spanish governor of Cuba, tried to recall Cortés in favor of a new expedition led by Pánfilo de Narváez. Cortés left Tenochtitlan to defend his own expedition, leaving Pedro de Alvarado in charge of Tenochtitlan. Cortés led a small army to the coast and attacked Narváez at night. After defeating Narváez's fleet,
