The concept of <a href="page.php?w=virtual_work">virtual work</a>, and the use of <a href="page.php?w=Calculus_of_variations">variational methods</a> in mechanics, preceded the introduction of "mechanical work" but was originally called "virtual moment". It was re-named once the terminology of Poncelet and Coriolis was adopted.</p>
