<p>At first, braille was a one-to-one transliteration of the French alphabet, but soon various abbreviations (contractions) and even <a href="page.php?w=logogram">logogram</a>s were developed, creating a system much more like shorthand.</p>

<p>Today, there are braille codes for over 133 languages.</p>
