in 1937 - albeit retaining the King for diplomatic functions - which declares that the country's name is Ireland. In 1949, by The Republic of Ireland Act 1948, it transferred these diplomatic functions to its own president, left the Commonwealth of Nations and adopted the alternative description "Republic of Ireland".
