The filter itself must not introduce intersymbol interference -- it needs to satisfy certain criteria. The <a href="page.php?w=Nyquist_ISI_criterion">Nyquist ISI criterion</a> is a commonly used criterion for evaluation, because it relates the frequency spectrum of the transmitter signal to intersymbol interference.</p>
