In the unicellular red alga Porphyridium purpureum, individual thylakoid membranes appear to traverse the pyrenoid; in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, multiple thylakoids merge at the periphery of the pyrenoid to form larger tubules that traverse the matrix.
