Overall, the acanthodians' <a href="page.php?w=Fish_jaw">jaws</a> are presumed to have evolved from the first <a href="page.php?w=gill_arch">gill arch</a> of some ancestral jawless fishes that had a gill skeleton made of pieces of jointed cartilage.</p>
