The tree is the only species in the monotypic genus Bertholletia, named after French chemist Claude Louis Berthollet.

Distribution and habitat

The Brazil nut is native to the Guianas, Venezuela, Brazil, eastern Colombia, eastern Peru, and eastern Bolivia.
