on the islands. Indian rhinos (Rhinoceros unicornis) were once present in the Sundarbans, but became locally extinct before 1920-1925 due to intensive hunting. Today, there are no rhino populations in the Sundarbans. The Ganges-Brahmaputra basin has tropical deciduous forests that yield valuable timber: sal, teak, and peepal trees are found in these areas.

It is estimated that 30,000 chital
