The same applies to other reference surfaces used as models for the Earth, such as oblate <a href="page.php?w=spheroid">spheroid</a>s, <a href="page.php?w=ellipsoids">ellipsoids</a>, and <a href="page.php?w=geoid">geoid</a>s. Since any map projection is a representation of one of those surfaces on a plane, all map projections distort.</p>
