Etymology

The word strobilus is related to the Ancient Greek ????????? (') = "something that turns, twists, spins, rolls into a rounded form". The Hebrew word for conifer cone, ???????? , is an ancient borrowing from the Greek. Liddell & Scott list several meanings related to these senses (hedgehogs, eggs, etc.), and these include the cone of the fir or pine, fir-apple, pine-cone, also of the tree itself.
