The city was partly destroyed by natural disasters and rebuilt several times, in the following 200 years.

The Ottomans appointed Greek christian administrators (Phanariotes) to run the town () from the 18th century. The 1821 Wallachian uprising initiated by Tudor Vladimirescu led to the end of the Phanariotes' rule in Bucharest.

In 1813-14 the city was hit by the Caragea's plague.
