He had few friends of his own age, but it was not the friendless and joyless experience he later said it was in his autobiography, Praeterita (1885-89). He was educated at home by his parents and private tutors, including <a href="page.php?w=Congregational_church">Congregationalist</a> preacher Edward Andrews, whose daughters, Mrs Eliza Orme and <a href="page.php?w=Emily_Augusta_Patmore">Emily Augusta Patmore</a></p><p>
