Another form of a modification is phosphorylation. Phosphorylation is when a kinase, a type of enzyme, adds a phosphate group to the protein. This process is reversible and the phosphate group can be removed from the protein when a phosphatase, another type of enzyme, is present. Phosphorylation plays an important role in the regulation of the activity of many different protein molecules.
