It appears as barbary or in Old French barbarie, itself derived from the Arabic Barbar, <a href="page.php?w=Berbers">Berber</a>, which is an ancient Arabic term for the North African inhabitants west of Egypt. The Arabic word might be ultimately from Greek barbaria.</p>
