Haifa is thought to be the archaeological site of Tell Abu Hawam, about 2.5km southeast of the Old City, which contains remains from Iron Age, Roman and Byzantine Haifa. It was abandoned by the twelfth century. Other sources suggest it may have been along the shores of the Haifa Bay, either at the site of Bat Galim or Haifa el-Atika.
