The origin of this term is obscure; suggested origins include the biblical <a href="page.php?w=Eber">Eber</a>, the ethnonyms <a href="page.php?w=%3FApiru">?Apiru</a>, Habiru, and Hapiru found in sources from <a href="page.php?w=ancient_Egypt">ancient Egypt</a> and <a href="page.php?w=West_Asia">West Asia</a>, and a derivation from the root <i>???</i> 'to pass', alluding to crossing over the <a href="page.php?w=Jordan_River">Jordan River</a>.</p><p>
