His adviser, Arthur Edwin Kennelly, demanded more work from him, but Bush refused, and Kennelly was overruled by the department chairman. Bush received his doctorate in engineering jointly from MIT and Harvard University. He married Davis in August 1916. They had two sons: Richard Davis Bush and John Hathaway Bush.
