The earliest counting device was most likely a form of <a href="page.php?w=tally_stick">tally stick</a>. Later record keeping aids throughout the <a href="page.php?w=Fertile_Crescent">Fertile Crescent</a> included calculi (clay spheres, cones, etc.) which represented counts of items, likely livestock or grains, sealed in hollow unbaked clay containers.</p><p>
