This was the first work of royally-authorised devotional writing since the reign of Elizabeth I and was immensely popular in the seventeenth century. Cosin was exiled in Paris during the Commonwealth, but was made <a href="page.php?w=Bishop_of_Durham">Bishop of Durham</a> at the <a href="page.php?w=Stuart_Restoration">Restoration</a> in 1660, a post he held until his death.</p>
