Happisburgh parish of Whimpwell, lost to the sea only by 1183. As an even more recent example, in 1845, a plot of Happisburgh disappeared in a single night. The coastal part of the village is subject to frequent coastal erosion: houses that in 1998 had been over 20 ft from the sea now sit at the edge of a cliff and are expected to fall into the sea.
