Alexe is that many rivers in the Black Sea area have, since antiquity, names stemming from Iranophone tribes containing the don- ("water", "river") particle, such as the Don, the Danube, the Dnieper and the Dniester.

The region is bounded by the Dniester to the north and east, the Prut to the west, and the lower River Danube and Black Sea
