2007–2017

After being owned by the same four founders since 1971, ownership of the Reader changed several times between 2007 and 2018.

The precipitous decline in profits from 2004 to 2006 prompted owner-founder Tom Rehwaldt to file a lawsuit against the company. This lawsuit led to the sale of the Reader and its sibling, Washington City Paper, to Creative Loafing
