<p>As in much of western Canada, many of the earliest European communities in <a href="page.php?w=British_Columbia">British Columbia</a> began as outposts of the <a href="page.php?w=Hudson%27s_Bay_Company">Hudson's Bay Company</a>, founded in London in 1670 to carry on the fur trade via Hudson Bay.  Broader settlement began in earnest with the founding of <a href="page.php?w=Fort_Victoria_%28British_Columbia%29">Fort Victoria</a></p><p>
