river. Small channel widths 10 - 300 m when compared to the lower reaches 1.2 - 1.6 km suggest the presence of a strong tidal influence upon the city--tidal waters ingressed up to and beyond the city. Upstream elements of this river provided a suitable source of fresh water for the inhabitants.

History

Before the arrival of Harappan people (c. 3000 BCE), Lothal was a small village next to the river providing access to the mainland from the Gulf of Khambhat.
