<p>The traditional explanation is that from the 1st to 5th centuries, the title "rabbi" was given to those sages of the <a href="page.php?w=Land_of_Israel">Land of Israel</a> who received formal ordination (semikhah), while the lesser title "rav" was given to sages who taught in the <a href="page.php?w=Talmudic_Academies_in_Babylonia">Talmudic Academies in Babylonia</a>,</p><p>
