<p>the canal, including keeping the locks in working order.  They tried to raise extra income from fishing and houseboat moorings as well as water supply. Unfortunately there was serious damage to Lock&nbsp;22 in 1957, when some troops blew up the lock and drained the pound above, and a major breach above Ash Lock caused by flooding in 1968. By the late 1960s the canal was essentially derelict, despite volunteer efforts to improve the situation.</p>
