Since epics were typically written about heroic kings and queens (and with pagan gods), Milton originally envisioned his epic to be based on a legendary <a href="page.php?w=Saxon">Saxon</a> or <a href="page.php?w=Celtic_Britons">British</a> king like the legend of <a href="page.php?w=King_Arthur">King Arthur</a>.
