<p><a href="page.php?w=Pre-Socratic_philosophy">Pre-Socratic philosophers</a> were the first Western philosophers to attempt to explain the world in terms of human reason and natural law without relying on myth, tradition, or religion. <a href="page.php?w=Protagoras">Protagoras</a>, who lived in Athens , put forward some fundamental humanist ideas, although only fragments of his work survive. He made one of the first agnostic statements; according to one fragment: "About the gods I am able to know neither that they exist nor that they do not exist</p><p>
