Experiments have been done with <a href="page.php?w=depleted_uranium">depleted uranium</a> targets, but although these produce the most intense neutron beams, they also have the shortest lives. Generally, therefore, <a href="page.php?w=tantalum">tantalum</a> or <a href="page.php?w=tungsten">tungsten</a> targets have been used.
