they were forcibly disembarked in Newfoundland; by the time they were returned to Scotland, three of them had died. The captain and mate of the cargo ship were tried in a blaze of publicity at the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh and served short prison terms.

Custom House and steamboats

In 1714 Greenock became a custom house port as a branch of Port Glasgow,
