<p>The term, commonwealth, which refers to a state in which the supreme power is vested in the people, was first used in <a href="page.php?w=Colony_of_Virginia">Virginia</a> during the <a href="page.php?w=Interregnum_%28England%29">Interregnum</a>, the 1649-60 period between the reigns of <a href="page.php?w=Charles_I_of_England">Charles I</a></p><p>
