<p>A character is the smallest unit of text that has semantic value.  In <a href="page.php?w=linguistics">linguistics</a>, this is called a <a href="page.php?w=grapheme">grapheme</a> and each of the various ways it may be written are called <a href="page.php?w=glyph">glyph</a>s.
