<p>Starting in early 1941, Chennault commanded the 1st American Volunteer Group (nicknamed <a href="page.php?w=Flying_Tigers">Flying Tigers</a>). He headed both the volunteer group and the uniformed U.S. Army Air Forces units that replaced it in 1942.
