on Anvers Island. It was shown on an Argentine government chart of 1954, but not named. It was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-names Committee (UK-APC) in 1958 because of the large number of cormorants (shags) seen there.

Important Bird Area

The island has been identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International
