His mother, the former Gertrude Holman, was Westminster's church pianist. Though part of a musical family, Hawes was almost entirely self-taught on the piano.

Life and career

By his teens, Hawes was playing with some of the leading jazz musicians on the West Coast, including Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, Art Pepper, Shorty Rogers, and Teddy Edwards.
