World War II. In 1947 he was brought to the United States as part of Operation Paperclip and went on to serve in a number of high-level scientific posts with the United States Air Force and NASA.

For his role in pioneering the study of the physical and psychological effects of crewed spaceflight he became known as "The Father of Space Medicine".
