in Bradford (now part of Haverhill), Massachusetts on June 10, 1832, to Isaac Carleton and Mary Richardson Carleton. He attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts from 1852 to 1855. He completed his BA at Dartmouth College in 1859.

Carleton married Laura Tenney Carleton August 8, 1860 in Hartford, Vermont.
