It is suggested that the name "Ledzianie" (*led-jan-in?) derives from the word "leda" of Proto-Slavic and Old Polish origin, meaning "slash-and-burn field".. Therefore it is suggested that the name of the tribe comes from their use of slash-and-burn agriculture, which involved cutting and burning of forests
