<p>The word Nilgiri is derived from the <a href="page.php?w=Sanskrit">Sanskrit</a> words nila (blue) and giri (mountain). It is thought that the bluish flowers of <a href="page.php?w=kurinji">kurinji</a> shrubs gave rise to the name.</p>

<p>A non-consensual identification of the Nilgiris with the Iraniyamuttam mentioned in <a href="page.php?w=Tamil_literature">Tamil literature</a> exist.</p>
